Volunteer Workday Details:
First Volunteer Workday at Lydick Bog
Date: Friday, April 21, 2017
Location: Lydick Bog in South Bend
Time: 9 am - 3 pm
Project: Garlic Mustard Pull
Shirley Heinze Land Trust is hosting a Hike and Volunteer Workday at Lydick Bog on Sunday, April 30th. Steve Sass will guide participants on a hike through the woods of Lydick Bog followed by a garlic mustard pull. The hike will start at 9 EST and the pull will be from 10AM-Noon. For those of you available in the afternoon, a second hike will embark at noon and volunteers will pull garlic mustard from 1-3PM.
Steve Sass is a member of Shirley Heinze Land Trust’s Advisory Council and is involved with numerous other environmentally related organizations. He is an expert on the habitat found at Lydick Bog and the surrounding area.
Shirley Heinze Land Trust acquired the 176-acre Lydick Bog property in 2016. The property contains one of the last remaining bog habitats in Indiana, and it represents a milestone for the organization as its first land conservation project in St. Joseph County. The organization plans to eventually open the property to the public for hiking, birding, nature study, and other passive recreation, but until infrastructure is in place, access by the public is restricted to guided hikes and special events. Don’t miss out on this special opportunity!
