WELCOME!
The Shirley Heinze Land Trust, a
non-profit organization, was endowed in 1981 as a charitable trust
to preserve and protect the unique ecosystems of the Indiana Dunes
region. The Heinze Land Trust acquires and preserves natural
lands in the southern Lake Michigan watershed. Current holdings
cover the entire range of habitat communities, including:
- Sand dunes and
interdunal ponds in Miller (Lake County)
- Globally rare
dune-and-swale habitat in Hammond and Gary (Lake County)
- Wet woodlands,
stepped fen, and tallgrass prairie in the Hobart Marsh area
- Sand prairie,
yellow-birch fen, and oak savanna in Porter County
- Boreal
flatwoods and wetlands in LaPorte County
Five Heinze Trust properties - Cressmoor Prairie in Hobart, Seidner
Dune and Swale in Hammond, John Merle Coulter Preserve in Portage,
and Barker Woods and Ambler Flatwoods in Michigan City - are
dedicated state nature preserves.
Our goals are:
- To protect
endangered habitats through acquisition and restoration of
environmentally significant properties
- To promote
environmental awareness through community outreach programs and
publications
- To advance the
goals of clean air and water for Northwest Indiana
Successes in these endeavors have been possible through generous
contributions from the public, partnerships with public and private
groups sharing our goals, and the hard work of the directors, staff, and
volunteers.
Follow the links above for more information on the Heinze Fund, and
learn how you can become involved in preserving precious natural lands
for future generations. Your help is vital!
