Father Basil Moreau Nature Preserve
Father Basil Moreau Nature Preserve is a wet hardwood forest with several temporary spring ponds and seasonally flooded streams. A large wetland area at the north boundary features buttonbush, swamp rose, and lizard’s tail. Woodland flowers – spring beauty, woodland phlox, wild geranium, dwarf ginseng – bloom in the spring. While the site has been subject to selective logging in the past, the
majority of the property has seen little human disturbance. Invasive plant
species are not well established except along the periphery.
Father Basil Moreau Nature Preserve is located in Pine Township, Porter County, at the intersection of
1600 North and County Line Rd, just south of Pines Elementary School. A trail system is being developed in the southeast corner. Call Shirley Heinze Land Trust (219-242-8558) for advice before visiting.
