Shirley Heinze Land Trust’s mission is twofold: to protect habitats and ecosystems through acquisition, restoration, and protection of natural landscapes, and to educate people of all ages about the value of land conservation. We fulfill that mission in a variety of ways, including through public events like our guided nature walks and volunteer workdays.
We hope you will be attending our formal guided hike this Saturday, September 13. We will be hearing from Indiana University PhD Candidate Jonathon Bauer about soil bacteria, fungi, and other organisms in prairies and their importance to prairie restoration. The cost is $25 per person. Please check out the event page for more details.

In October, we will be starting off the thanks-giving season early with two events; the Donor Appreciation Hike and Luncheon on October 11, and the Volunteer Appreciation Hike and Potluck on October 25. These events are free and anyone is welcome to attend to learn about what we have accomplished this year, how much we appreciate all the support we are given by the public, and take a tour of the newest extension to our headquarters.
Both events will be held here at Meadowbrook Nature Preserve in Valparaiso, in one of our cabins. After lunch, we will take our guests on a guided tour of the newly acquired 80 acres of Meadowbrook East. You will see and hear about the major reforestation project that will be going on here for the next four years, which will be one of the biggest projects of this kind in Northwest Indiana. Part of this property is remnant woodland with a wide diversity of trees and herbaceous species, and we hope to return a majority of the property back from agricultural land into woodland.
The Volunteer Luncheon is potluck style. We will provide the main dish, and we ask that attendees bring a side or a dessert to share. We will also be announcing the 2014 Volunteer of the Year.
Please RSVP to these events by calling the office at (219) 242-8558, or by emailing jerdelac@heinzetrust.org
Additional upcoming events:
September 27 – Free Guided Hike at Seidner Dune and Swale co-led by Emily Stork and Jim Erdelac
September 27 – Volunteer workday: Seed collection at Cressmoor Prairie Nature Preserve
October 11 – Donor Appreciation Hike and Luncheon at Meadowbrook Nature Preserve
October 25 – Volunteer Appreciation Potluck at Meadowbrook Nature Preserve
There are maintained trails at many of our nature preserves that are open every day, so you can visit and enjoy our properties on your own. Check our our nature preserves page to find a site near you!
