This 84-acre site is a bur oak savanna remnant that features mesic woodland areas,
wet depressions and open sedge meadows. Many majestic bur oak trees found here are
several hundred years old, spreading as wide as they are tall, as is typical of
open-grown trees. In spring, one can encounter many species of Violets, Wild Geranium
and the delicate flowers of Spicebush. The Blue-Spotted Salamander, a species of
special concern in Indiana, has been sighted here, and typical woodland birds, such
as the Northern Flicker, Eastern Wood Peewee and Northern Cardinal call this site
home.
Please note this preserve is closed between October 1 and January 4.
From Ridge Rd. (East 37th Ave) in Hobart, travel south on Liverpool Road about 1.3
miles. The woods are south of the railroad tracks. Park on the east side of Liverpool
Road, at the south end of the woods. Preserve is bordered by homes on the south
and east, by a single house (on a deep, triangular shaped lot) on north and Liverpool
Rd on west. A loop trail begins at Liverpool Road at the SW corner of the property.
