2008 Hike Program

The hikes are $30 per person and sign up is required. Unless otherwise noted, groups size is limited to 20. The Composite Workshop cost is $75 per person. Woodcock Rendezvous

Saturday, April 5 - 7:00 p.m. CDT

Witness the exciting aerial courtship displays of the male Woodcock. No charge or sign up required. If you would like to participate, just meet us at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore at the Kemil Beach parking area. From highways 49 & 12 go east 3 miles then north about 1 mile on East State Park Road (Kemil Road). Leader: Ted Wintefield, Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Ranger. (Hike #1)


Spring Wildflowers and Birds

Dragons and Dragonflies

 

Coulter - Portage, Indiana

Saturday, May 10 - 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. CDT

 

Alan (of the Field Museum) and Donna Resetar will show us Coulter's Cold-blooded Treasures, looking for spring frogs and dragonfly adults and naiads. Group size limited to 15.  (Hike #3)

 

 

 


 Yellow Birch Wetland

 

LaPorte County

Saturday, June 7 - 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. CDT

 

Donated to the Nature Conservancy in the 1980s by Nickolas Timm and Deborah Longworth, this preserve features a perched fen, marshes, sedge meadow, seeps, a tamarack grove, a forest containing the state champion Yellow Birch tree (hence the name) and a number of interesting plants, including some orchids. This preserve is not open to the public. The hike will be led by Stuart Orr of The Nature Conservancy. Group size limited to 15. (Hike #4)

 

 


 Springfield Fen

 

LaPorteCounty

Saturday, June 28 -- 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. CDT

 

Botanists Scott Namestnik of J. F. New will show us many rare and interesting plants in this high quality prairie fen preserve. Group size limited to 15. (Hike #5)

 

  


 Hoosier Prairie

 

Griffith, Indiana

Saturday, September 6 -- 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. CDT

 

Tom Post of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources leads us through portions of this 430-acre crown jewel of the Indiana nature preserve system  Hoosier Prairie contains a complex of prairie, marsh, and oak savanna. The hike will include parts of this preserve not normally open to the public. (Hike #6)

 

 


General Information

Unless otherwise indicated, all hikes have a maximum of 20 participants (in addition to hike leaders): this allows all to see special features close up. Hikes are conducted rain or shine, except during thunderstorms. Times noted are hiking times and do not include meeting and driving time. We advise hikers to bring drinking water, binoculars, and/or hand lenses, to be prepared for sun (or rain) and insects, and to wear comfortable clothes and shoes that can handle muddy going and very wet ground. Participants will be enrolled on a first-come, first-served basis. If your check is not returned, you have been enrolled. Directions and meeting locations will be mailed to participants one week before each hike. SEND YOUR CHECK AT LEAST 10 DAYS BEFORE THE FIRST HIKE YOU PLAN TO ATTEND!

Composite Identification Workshop at the Bailly Ranger Station

 Composite Identification Field Trip. Location to be announced.

 

Sunflowers, asters, fleabanes, goldenrods!  All of these beautiful plants have something in common.  All are members of the composite or sunflower family, and all can be difficult to identify. Join botanists Scott Namestnik and Karen Quinlan of J. F. New for a detailed look at these colorful plants and gain experience in composite identification. This is an evening class followed by a morning hike. Prior knowledge of composite identification is not necessary. Maximum group size of 25. Cost is $75 per person.
