Ivanhoe South Nature Preserve Initiative

Shirley Heinze Land Trust’s vision for our Ivanhoe South Nature Preserve is to create an outdoor classroom where students and community members can access and explore this rare dune-and-swale area on both guided and self-guided tours. Unfortunately, public access to this valuable natural area is limited and prevents the community from utilizing it to its fullest extent. Further, trailhead infrastructure is sorely needed to adequately conduct educational hikes for local students and community members at large. Last but not least, we plan to raise the public visibility of Ivanhoe South Nature preserve by partnering with community groups to launch a local media campaign.

Our goal is to raise $20,000 for the Ivanhoe South Nature Preserve Initiative. We are pleased to announce that Legacy Foundation of Lake County will match dollar for dollar the first $2,500 in donations received. The funds raised will be used for improvements to Ivanhoe South including:
  • a small parking lot for cars and school buses;
  • a bio-swale for water runoff;
  • a trailhead kiosk with map and nature preserve information;
  • interpretive signs to teach visitors about natural features;
  • ongoing trail maintenance and restoration projects.

Send your gift today to help us fulfill our goals for this rare and precious natural area!

With a gift of $150, your support will be recognized with a 4”x8” engraved paver placed at the trailhead. In return for a generous gift at the $250 or $500 level, we will engrave and install a 12” x 12” paver at the trailhead in your honor. For more information on how to help us create this outdoor classroom, please contact Shandra Niswander, Development Coordinator at 219-879-4725 or via e-mail at development@heinzetrust.org
