Heinze Sights Spring 2010—Volume 13 - Issue 1

Chuck and Mary Chuman have always loved the outdoors. They met on an outing sponsored by a Seattle mountaineering club. Both were working at the University of Washington Hospital at the time. Chuck, a neurosurgeon, and Mary, a neurological physiologist, became a couple and moved to Chicago, Chuck’s boyhood home. Their interest in the natural world led them to visit the Indiana Dunes, where Chuck introduced Mary to hiking trails he had first explored when he was just eleven.

Eventually the two moved to the lakeside community of Dune Acres, where they have lived for the past 21 years in a home just a short walk from the beach. “I first learned about Shirley Heinze,” says Mary, “soon after we moved to the Dunes. I followed Barbara Plampin on her nature walks, and I picked up brochures about the organization from her.” With an interest thus sparked, Mary and Chuck soon learned more about the Heinze Trust and its work, started participating in its guided hikes and other programs, and became regular donors.

Chuck has developed a great appreciation for the way in which Shirley Heinze Land Trust fulfills its mission. “They have extremely knowledgeable people who have studied the natural history of this area and understand what the wilderness here once looked like,” he says. “I am impressed by the efficiency and resourcefulness evident in their efforts to restore the land to its original natural integrity.”

Chuck and Mary have embraced the Northwest Indiana community and become very active in it, juggling professional responsibilities with numerous volunteer and philanthropic activities. Chuck maintains a medical office in Crown Point, and he is on the staff at St. Anthony Medical Center in Crown Point, and St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart. Mary performs some duties as a health care consultant, but she gives much of her time to a variety of local non-profits. She conducted a youth reading program at the Westchester Township Library for a number of years, and she recently was guest curator of an exhibit at the Township History Museum celebrating the Town of Dune Acres’ 85th anniversary. She is also active with the Chesterton Art Center.

Chuck and Mary Chuman are successful professionals who have always found time to give back to their community. We are pleased that their love of nature and vibrant curiosity have drawn them to Shirley Heinze Land Trust, and we are delighted to include them as members of our family. ~ Ron Trigg
